So let's start with what we actually know. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests under one hour of high-quality programming a day for ages 2–5. Most kids exceed that. And most of the research that links screens to attention or language outcomes is correlational — meaning the screen often isn't causing the problem; it's filling time that would otherwise be spent on the things that build attention and language. That distinction matters, because it tells us what to do.

The fix isn't to remove screens. It's to build a nest of small, easy, screen-free defaults that your kid can fall into. Why the kitchen table works

Before the twenty ideas: a quick frame. Young children learn primarily through fine motor practice, narrative, and imitation.   1. The "today's three things" ritual. Three things they did today, three they'll do tomorrow. Builds memory and narrative.

  3. Story-build with cards. Five image cards face-down. Flip one at a time, build the story. Sequencing, vocabulary, joy.
  4. One soft sound. Rain on a window. A music box. Replace background TV with background quiet.
  5. The crayon goes to bed too. Tidy together. Crayons go in the basket. The basket goes on the shelf. Tomorrow is set up.
